Uniqueness Vs Standing Out

There is a great book out there called Packaging Girlhood by Sharon Lamb and Lyn Mikel Brown. They make the point that although girls want to be unique and express their individuality, they have limited choices of how they can choose to do that. The media and retailers only give girls a few different options of how they can express themselves. I highly recommend the book to those who would love to recognize how marketers are shaping the way teen girls express themselves.

The point that I want to make in this post is that each of you are already unique. There really is not a need to ’stand out’ or to fall into media driven stereotypes. Each person has unique gifts, talents, and abilities. Each person has had unique experiences that have shaped their lives. Everyone has incredible unique value to offer the world. Search within yourself to find inner parts of yourself that make you, you. There is only one you. Share that version of yourself with the world and you will attract people into your life that value and appreciate you.

My Name is HAD– Life Lessons Learned!

If I could really talk to you and you could really listen, I’d tell you I have no idea how all of this happened. Honestly, I was just like you. I didn’t plan to be Had. I didn’t want to be Had. One day I hadn’t, and then the next day I had. Oh, I know where I went wrong. I have rewound the nightmare a thousand times, stopping it right at the point where I departed the trail of good sense. The way ahead didn’t look wrong. It just looked different. Strange, he didn’t look like the devil in the original scene. But every time I replayed it, he dropped another piece of his masquerade. When he finally took off his mask, he was laughing at me. Nothing seems funny anymore. I will never laugh again as long as he is laughing.

If only I could go back. I would see it this time! I would walk around the trap camouflaged by the bush, and I would not be Had. I would be proud. Was that my old name? Proud? I can’t even remember who I was anymore. I thought I was Good. Not Proud. But I don’t know anymore. Would you believe I never heard the trap shut? Too many voices were shouting in my head. I just new I got stuck somewhere unfamiliar and soon I didn’t like the scenery anymore. I wanted to go home. I pulled and pulled on the trap but the foothold wouldn’t budge. I had no way out. I screamed for God. He came for me. As he inspected my shattered ankle I expected him to say, “You deserve this, you know. You’ve been Had.” Because he did and I know and I have. He hasn’t said it yet. I don’t know how much to trust him yet. I’ve never known him from this side. My leg still hurts. God says it will heal in time. But I fear I will always walk with a limp. You see I wrestled with the devil and he gave me a new name. Had.

Have you ever been Had? God says He doesn’t want us to forget. We say, we just want to be healed. Has Good or Proud ever gotten in the way of you being Healed? There have been more Hads than Good or Proud may ever know. And sometimes it takes a Has Been to know a Had. God wanted to make sure we never act like we never been Had, so he leaves the scares. Never forget where you have been, and never forget the dead times God has raised you up from the times of being Had. Learn from them, mature from them and praise God for the Had that you once were and may be again.

First Time Homebuyers Program

In 2008 the program was offering $7,500 that you had to pay back over 15 years. To me this reads a loan with low interest rates. I didn’t like that plan. The 2009 plan is you can receive up to $8,000 or 10% of the purchase price on a home purchased before Dec. 01, 2009. That’s on my birthday. In reality everything needs to be done by November 30, 2009. What is First Time Homeowner?

To qualify as a first time home owner your name can not have been on title for three years. We all thought we could apply for this credit; but, there is an income limitation on this credit. The credit starts to phase out if your income exceeds $75,000 per year if you are single and $150,000 if you are married that one hurts for individuals or couples that make more than the amounts listed above. Now everyone can do the next requirement which is stay in the home for three years and you don’t have to pay the money back. WOW! That is a sweet deal.

If you are planning to purchase a home and you have the means to do it now is a really good time.

Why Charles Darwin Was So Interested in Islands

The land iguanas of the Galapagos Islands are another example of speciation it action. These lizards appears slightly different in color and shape from island to island, and have begun to separate into two groups distinct enough to be considered separate species; Conolophus subcristatus and Conolophus pallidus.

On the Galapagos Islands life is so diverse that an entire ecosystem can exist in a square meter of land. Charles Darwin on his beagle voyage noted that life on each island was similar, yet different, the concept of variation on a theme. On his return home from England Darwin was surprised to learn that the many different looking birds he had collected from the Galapagos archipelago were in fact all finches. Darwin used the idea of islands in many of the thought experiments he used to devise his theories. Darwin realized that speciation (formation of new species) is a process, not an event; there is no point in time or space when a population is certainly a new species. Archipelagos provide the perfect environment to see evidence of this process. In Voyage of the Beagle Darwin wrote: “The (Galapagos) archipelago is a little world within itself, or rather a satellite attached to America…”

A population of organisms on an island is relatively small and isolated. In larger mainland populations any mutations tend to have less effect because they quickly become diluted. Hence speciation happens much faster on islands. Islands are the closest a person can get to seeing evolution in action.

Can I Fix My Own Roof?

1) What is the extent of the damage? Assuming that the root cause of the problem is plainly obvious, you can more or less have an idea of the amount of effort that you’ll have to put in to carry out the repair. You might, though, likely underestimate the extent of the problem; and that’s when issue # 2 comes into the picture.

2) How much time can you spare to learn the skills and to do the repair properly? Obviously, the job will be much easier and more enjoyable if you already have some knowledge of carpentry, for example. If you’re a total neophyte, you’re more likely to aggravate the problem instead of fixing it. The only way to improve your chances of doing a good job at roof repair is to do the research and then to dive right in and get your hands dirty.

3) Finally, you’ll need to find out what equipment you will need-which ones you already have and which ones you’ll have to purchase. This is when you’ll have to take money into account. Unless you intend to make roof repair a yearly hobby and you already own at least the basic carpentry equipment to do the job, it might prove less expensive and less aggravating to hire a QUALIFIED roofer to do the job for you.

Answer these three questions first before you set out on a roof-repair project.

How Many People Currently Have Gum Disease?

One reason for high gum disease figures is that people are affected at different levels of severity. The mildest conditions might be manifested as bad breath or sensitive teeth. Many people including children and teens are affected by gingivitis which typically results in bleeding gums while brushing or eating hard foods like apples or carrots. The more severe manifestation of gingival disease is periodontal disease in which the gums and underlying tissue and bone are affected.

Severe periodontal disease is very hard to reverse once it has set in. In such cases the gum starts to retreat away from the teeth causing the teeth to loosen. Also the increase in space between the gums and teeth allows more food particles, sugars, acids and bacteria to attack the root of the teeth and the bone. Once this happens the teeth may eventually fall out as there is less and less structural matter there to keep them in place.

Why so many people in Western and wealthier societies have this disease is primarily a result of diet and lifestyle. Smoking for example is notorious for affecting the teeth and diets rich in sugar are also a major culprit. Nutrition generally is important for good oral health and, surprisingly, people in richer societies often consume diets that are very unbalanced.

As well as a good diet, this disease can be avoided or reversed by good oral hygiene. It is important to brush the teeth at least twice daily and floss once a day. A good germ killing mouthwash can also be helpful to rid the mouth of damaging bacteria in cases where gum disease has already set in. But, if all that worked well, would 80% of the people have a problem?
